Boys State Report
10th District Meeting
January 28, 2012
William Merritt Hallock Post 155
The program this year will again be 5 days, from June 24th thru June 29th . The cost per boy has not changed, still $300 per boy, plus county expenses. Also still at S.U.N.Y. Morrisville. Department and counselors are not very happy with the five day program and are planning on going back to the six day schedule.
Department is trying something new this year: APPLICATIONS ON LINE. They also tried to have the booklet that goes with the application at mid-winter, but ran out: as usual people took more than they should have. They will be mailing the rest of the booklets out soonest (But I would call to make sure). The reason for all this is mailing costs, with another cost increase due soon.
The way they are hoping to have it work this year is as follows:
1. Post chairmen will contact dept. and get a password. They interview the boys, make their selections, and then the selected candidates are given the password.
2. The selected candidates then go on line and open the application with their password. They fill out all the personal information and send that to Dept.(Ann) Then they print the application and get parents signature, school officials signature, notarize where necessary.
3. Send the application to the post chairman, who then sends it to the county chairman so he has it before April 29th .
4. The county chairman then gets a check and sends all applications at one mailing to Dept. before May 14th .
5.
F.Y.I. It was
stated, and I quote: "The quotas assigned more than equal the number of openings for boys this year". This means, the
last applications received may be returned, so get them in on time !!
6. Just an idea. But if post and county chairmen want to save some phone calls and mailing, get an e-mail address from your candidates. Kids live, eat and sleep with their computers and fancy phones and will answer electronic mail faster and more reliably.
Now, the key word above is "hoping". The software guy says all will be in place very soon. If not, I imagine we will be notified A.S.A.P. Post Chairmen, don't worry, the boys know how to work a computer, nothing that you have to worry about, you just pay attention to the cut-off dates!! There is also a DVD out with a statement about Boys State by Tom Brokaw, or you can e-rnail executive director John Murphy at drsjem@prodigy.net and he will send a file you can download. Ann Brown also has the DVD from last year if you need a copy.
Keep in mind that all this is "a work in progress" and be patient. And, last night I tried to go into the Dept. Legion programs under Boys State, and got sent on a wild goose chase. They are working on it, but if you go underneath the Cmdrs. picture to related links, you can get in. So just be patient.
Philip J. Gomez
Past 10th Dist. Cmdr.
10th Dist. Boys State Director.

The Annual Four Chaplains Service will be conducted at Joseph Loeffler Post 1006, Brentwood on Sunday, February 12th at 2:00 pm.
On February 3, 1943, the U.S.A.T. DORCHESTER was tragically sunk by a torpedo from a German U-Boat. Of the 902 young men on board, only 230 survived. Many of those survivors owe their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by the heroic Four Chaplains, who, in sacrificing their lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood. The four chaplains put the lives of others before their own by directing frightened service members to lifeboats, distributing life jackets, and putting their own life jackets on young soldiers.
This year, The Suffolk County American Legion will pay tribute to those courageous Chaplains and the 672 brave young men who lost their lives on that fateful night.
This service also honors all those who have served, and whose courage and faith have sustained our country.
Please make every effort to participate in this annual service. As we come together as fellow Legionnaires of different faiths, let us renew our commitment of selfless service to our fellow veterans, our active duty military and our Nation.
Spouses, children and grandchildren are welcome.
The Place: Joseph Loeffler Post 1006, 198 First Street, Brentwood
The Date: Sunday, February 12
The Time: 2:00 pm
Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony

Operation: HOPE
Those that have served our nation in combat often face exceptional obstacles readjusting to civilian life. These may range from severe physical injury to post traumatic stress disorder, as well as the challenge of beginning a new career in a weak economy.
Families of those serving, as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice, often have difficulty making ends meet, along with the psychological scar of an extended absence or lost loved one.
Long Island has the second largest veteran population in the United States. To help the many that are struggling and in need of food assistance, Island Harvest is launching Operation: HOPE – a new program specifically designed to assist veterans and the families of active duty personnel deployed overseas.
Program Description
Thanks to the generosity of NBTY Helping Hands Charity, Island Harvest has secured a refrigerated Operation: HOPE van. Staffed with volunteers who are also veterans, and working with local veterans organizations, Operation: HOPE will deliver food and supplies to the doors of Long Island veterans and their families 2 days a week. In addition, Operation: HOPE volunteers will provide information and referrals to link veterans and military families with benefits and services that can help them.
Partnerships Needed
To ensure Operation: HOPE’s optimal impact, Island Harvest seeks partners who can provide:
· financial contributions so that we can leverage our resources to secure the needed food, supplies and services to support this program
· information on where veterans and their families are located, (we will direct referrals to our veteran partner agencies to pre-screen applicants)
· veterans who are willing to volunteer driving the van and assisting with referrals, and
· information on various benefits and services that can help veterans and military families.

Huntington, N.Y. - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th L.D., Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee and Legislator Wayne Horsley (D-Babylon) 14th LD are proud to announce that their legislation declaring September 16th “American Legion Day” in Suffolk County passed unanimously at the September General meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. A Color Guard representing the Suffolk County American Legion presented the colors to open the session.
The American Legion is the nation’s largest veteran’s service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security and continued devotion to our service members and to our veterans.
“Legionnaires work to preserve and maintain law and order, foster a sense of national pride and instill a sense of community across our great country. It is indeed fitting that Suffolk County designates September 16th as “American Legion Day” to honor the great men and women who have served our country and continue their commitment to our community today,” said Horsley.
“As Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, I am privileged to work with and for the brave men and women who have and who continue to sacrifice so much to protect our freedom and our way of life,” Legislator Stern said. “I am honored to join with Legislator Horsley to declare September 16th “American Legion Day” in Suffolk County and to have the opportunity to demonstrate to our active military and to our veterans and their families how deeply grateful we are to the members of the American Legion for their continuing service to our great nation.”
